(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Hong Jeong-gyu = On the 18th, a method was prepared to find out whether I have ‘hidden insurance money’, if so, where and how much it is, and how I can receive the money.
All you have to do is access ‘Find My Insurance’, an integrated inquiry system for hidden insurance benefits that started operating this afternoon.
It is also possible through the Internet homepage (http://cont.insure.or.kr), as well as the Life Insurance Association, Non-life Insurance Association, and Financial Supervisory Service’s ‘Fine’ homepage.
The inquiry process is simple. On the first screen, click ‘Search for hidden insurance benefits’ or, if you have applied for an in-person inquiry of the heir, click ‘View results’.
To search for hidden insurance benefits, simply enter your name, mobile phone number, and resident registration number and verify your identity. The authentication method can be selected from mobile phone, i-PIN, or public certificate.
Once you have completed your identity verification, you can view the insurance contracts in which you have signed up as a policyholder or beneficiary (insurance claim holder) in a clear table.
The name of the insurance company and product, as well as whether the contract is in effect and when it expires, are displayed along with the phone number of the store in charge.
You can also find out what hidden insurance money is, what type of insurance money it is, and how much interest is added to the principal.
There are three types of hidden insurance money: midterm, maturity, and dormant insurance money. Midterm insurance money is money accrued before the contract has expired, but due to reasons for payment, such as employment or children’s further education.
The maturity date has passed, but the statute of limitations (2 to 3 years) has not yet been completed. Dormant insurance money is held by insurance companies or contributed to the Korea Inclusive Finance Agency after the statute of limitations has passed.
If hidden insurance money is discovered, you can file a claim with the relevant insurance company online or by phone. In principle, deposit must be made within three days (3 business days).
However, there are insurance companies that allow online insurance claims and some that do not. The Financial Services Commission and the Financial Supervisory Service plan to ensure that all hidden insurance claims can be easily claimed online.
Dormant insurance money may have been contributed to the Korea Inclusive Finance Agency. Legally, it is no longer ‘my money’. However, if you visit the insurance company’s branch and make a claim, it will be returned to your designated account.
Online inquiry and billing are easy, but some people have difficulty using computers or smartphones. In this case, when you open your mailbox, you may receive a welcome notice like a ‘Christmas greeting card.’
All hidden insurance contracts over 10,000 won will be notified by mail. As each insurance company sends information, there is a possibility of overlap.
Since 2015, 160,000 cases of death insurance money, that is, insurance money incurred due to the death of the insured person, have also been confirmed.
The information regarding these hidden insurance benefits and death benefits includes a phone number that you can call if you have any questions about ‘insurance benefit generation, claim procedures, and other matters.’
You can also go to the nearest life insurance and non-life insurance association office. Visiting hours are from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays. You must bring your ID. Jeju has a joint support center.
