※ This article is recommended for new business owners in the industry because it is an application for individual business registration in the mail order business (Coupang, smart store, online shopping mall, overseas direct purchase agency, SNS marketing, etc.).
How to apply for business registration as an individual business
Step 1. Access Hometax
All applications for business registration are made on a website called Hometax (hometax.go.kr).
There is also a way to go to the tax office with your ID, but it is more convenient to do it online.
First of all, let’s connect to Hometex.

Step 2. Simple application for (individual) business registration
Go to the Hometax website and click (individual) business registration simple application → mail-order business registration application in the application/submission section.

※ In the case of general mail-order business, it is correct to apply for “simple application”. “Application for (individual) business registration” under Simple Application should be selected if you are running a business other than mail order business.
If you click Apply for mail-order business registration, a login screen will appear to confirm your identity.
You can log in with a joint certificate, but it is easiest to log in through Simple Authentication → KakaoTalk Identity Authentication.

If you’ve made it this far, you’ll be asked to install a security program (if you haven’t installed it before).
Install all security programs by clicking Install. If the installation is successful, click Refresh to go to the next step.
Step 3. Apply for business registration
If the log-in and security program installation are successful, you will be directed to the mail-order business individual business registration application screen.

Now, let’s fill in the necessary information for the registration application for private business.
Enter your personal information:
– Enter your name, e-mail, etc. without omission.
– In the case of a business phone number, home phone number, or fax number, please enter your mobile phone number.
Enter business information:
– Name the business name (company name) (you can build it as you wish).
– Select the opening date (you can set it to the current date).
Choose your industry:
– This is the most important part of the business registration application.
– In general, if you are doing Coupang Partners, Coupang Seller, Naver Smart Store, or online shopping mall, you can select e-commerce retail business (industry code: 525101) from mail order business.
– If you are conducting an online business in a slightly different field, we recommend that you carefully research and select the industry code.
– In my case, I also had an overseas direct purchase agency business through the Coupang Marketplace in mind, so I chose overseas direct purchase agency e-commerce retail brokerage (industry code: 525105, industry classification code: 47911) as a secondary business.

Select operator type:
– For new business owners, it is recommended to provide a simplified taxpayer.
– It is said that simplified taxpayers have the advantage that the value-added tax rate is lower than general taxpayers. (I’m still a beginner in business, so I don’t know the obvious advantages. In general, new businesses say they choose simplified taxpayers).
– Even if you choose a simplified taxpayer, you will be changed to a general taxpayer if your sales exceed 80 million won later.

Below is the selection of documents to be submitted.
If your business is your home address and you are doing an online business like the information and communication industry, there are no specific documents to submit.

In the final confirmation, check the submitted documents and click Submit Application.

This completes the application for business registration as a sole proprietorship. You are almost ready to become a sole proprietor.
Step 4. Confirm business registration application result
Within 24 hours of applying for individual business registration like this (usually 10 minutes after applying), you will receive a text message as a result of your business registration application.

As shown in this letter, you can visit the Civil Services Office of the tax office or print it out at Heumtax to obtain a business registration certificate.
Personally, I recommend getting a PDF file from Hometax and printing it out for issuance of a business registration certificate.

Step 5. Issuance of business registration certificate
When all these steps are completed,
