(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Ki-seong = The CEO of blockchain startup Ripple made an optimistic claim that the virtual currency market will double by the end of this year, exceeding approximately 700 trillion won in market size.
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, who is also the issuer of Ripple (XRP), the 7th largest virtual currency in terms of market capitalization, said this on CNBC on the 7th (local time) while mentioning the launch of a Bitcoin spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) early this year and the Bitcoin halving at the end of this month.
He said, “I’ve been in the industry for a long time and have seen these trends come and go,” and “I think that for the first time, macro trends and factors like ETFs are actually drawing institutional funds.”
He added, “We’re seeing this stimulate demand while simultaneously increasing demand and decreasing supply,” and added that even if you don’t major in economics, you can understand what happens when supply and demand expand. The total virtual currency market size is approximately $2.6 trillion (3,500 trillion won) as of the 4th, which means that if the market doubles, it will reach $5.2 trillion (7,000 trillion won), CNBC reported.
Bitcoin accounts for approximately 49% of the total cryptocurrency market, and as of the 1st, its market capitalization was $1.3 trillion (1,750 trillion won).
Bitcoin has surged more than 140% over the past 12 months. According to cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, it is currently trading at $69,700 as of 3 p.m. on the 8th, Korean time.
In addition, CEO Garlinghouse believes that there may be positive momentum in the United States regarding regulation.
This year is an election year, and it is expected that the next US administration will focus its policies on being more accepting of the virtual currency industry. He argued that “the United States is still the world’s largest economy, but unfortunately one of the most hostile cryptocurrency markets,” and that “the United States will begin to change.”
Marshall Beard, the chief operating officer (COO) of the U.S. cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, also claimed in a recent CNBC interview that the price of Bitcoin will rise to $150,000 (about 200 million won) later this year after going through large fluctuations.
However, some argue that the good news of the halving has already been reflected and that volatility will be high, and that it will fall to the $40,000 range.
