2. Conditions for applying for unemployment benefits

To apply for unemployment benefits, you must meet several application conditions.

● You must have worked at a job eligible for unemployment benefits, that is, a workplace covered by employment insurance, for a total of 180 days or more during the 18 months prior to the date of unemployment. (Periods worked at workplaces not covered by employment insurance are not included.)

● You must be currently unemployed and willing and able to work. This must be an involuntary change of job against one’s will, and the person must not be able to find a job despite active job search activities.

● You must actively make efforts to find re-employment (if you do not engage in re-employment activities, no payment will be made).

● The reason for job change must be unavoidable and involuntary.

●You must not fall under any of the reasons for eligibility restrictions (excluding cases of voluntary separation or dismissal due to serious reasons attributable to the employee).

●In the case of a voluntary job changer, if he or she has made efforts to avoid changing jobs before changing jobs, but changes jobs because it is difficult to continue working due to the circumstances of the employer, the inevitability of changing jobs may be acknowledged and eligibility for benefits may be granted.

3. Unemployment benefit period and payment amount

1) Period of receiving unemployment benefits

In the case of unemployment benefits, payments can be received for 120 to 270 days depending on the recipient’s age, disability, and employment insurance subscription period. It depends on the length of time the employee has been employed, the number of hours worked per day, and the worker’s age. If you are an ordinary worker and under the age of 50, you can receive unemployment benefits for up to 240 days. If you are over 50 years old or disabled, you can receive unemployment benefits for up to 270 days.

Unemployment benefits cannot be paid if it exceeds 12 months from the day following the date of job separation, even if the prescribed number of benefit days remain.

2) Unemployment benefit payment amount

How much unemployment benefit can I receive? Simply put, it is paid differently depending on the job seeker’s previous average wage and the period of application. Since each applicant’s case is different, I will try to calculate unemployment benefits myself.

Unemployment benefit payment = 60% of average wage before job change

4. How to apply for unemployment benefits

To apply for unemployment benefits, the employer of the company from which the employee retired must first submit a report of loss of worker and a confirmation of job change. If the employer fails to submit one, he or she must call the company from which he or she retired and request that they process the report of loss of employee and loss of insurance eligibility. When a business owner reports, it usually takes about 10 days to process.

Check the unemployment benefit application process

● You can apply online, but you must visit the employment center in your jurisdiction at least once and attend a briefing session on employment support for unemployment benefit applicants held at the job center. (You can also take online training for the briefing session on receiving unemployment benefits.)

● You must fill out and submit an application for recognition of eligibility and a re-employment action plan according to the employment support briefing held at the employment center. (If you visit after registering for job search through WorkNet, you can be exempted from training on how to use WorkNet and the time to fill out a job search form.)

● Rather than returning home immediately after the employment support briefing session, you will return home after individual consultation with the person in charge and receiving information about your future schedule.
