The name “Gwolli-sa (闕里祠)” is made up of Chinese characters, and each character has the following meaning.
Gwol (闕): means a city gate or palace.

The village of Gwolli (闕里) in Qufu is where Confucius was born.
Li (里): means village.
Sa (祠): means shrine. It refers to a place where ancestors or sages are worshipped and memorial services are held.
Therefore, “Gwolli-sa” means “a shrine in the village of Gokbu.”
In fact, the shrine of Confucius in Gokbu, Shandong Province, China is called “Gwolli-sa,” and it is the birthplace of Confucius and an important place to honor his academic legacy.
Many Gwolli-sa in Korea were built based on this Chinese Gwolli-sa, and they play a role in honoring Confucius and other Confucian sages and spreading their teachings.
