Is it possible to write a Korean passport with an English name that is not written on the resident registration? In conclusion, without considering the details, it is possible.
Although this is not possible through general passport screening, you can request additional screening from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the passport issuance complaint window.
First, I have been using the English name Hannah abroad. As a result, when schools issued various official/unofficial documents, they often wrote “Dear Hannah,” like this. So, I wanted to use this English name, which is more commonly used than my Korean name, as my official name by writing it on my passport.
Second, since I used the name Hannah when publishing papers in the future, if I enter that English name, various troublesome situations may arise during future permanent residency screening. For example, although you published a paper using the name Hannah, it may not be recognized as your performance because it is not your official name, even though it is a paper you wrote yourself. To prevent troublesome situations in the future, I decided to write my passport in English.
Before the name. A notation is possible afterward.
-Notated as JAMES GILDONG, GILDONG JAMES, etc.
Simply because you want to put an English name on your passport will not subject you to a review by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If you apply for the reason that you will use it for future study abroad, etc., it is not possible to write it together. Application is possible only if records of using a foreign name for a long period of time are submitted as evidence.
After adding a foreign name, it cannot be changed later.
Or, if you prove that you have already lived for a long time with a different notation from the passport, you can request a change to the English name instead of the parallel notation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Passport and Legal Affairs).
1) Circumstances that indicate that the name was used abroad must be acknowledged due to frequent overseas departures or long-term stays abroad. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs independently verifies the fact of overseas immigration.
2) An (official) document is required to acknowledge the use of the name abroad.
3) You must bring your ID and previously used passport.
4) At least two passport photos that meet the specifications are required.
If issuing a regular passport takes about 5 days, if a Ministry of Foreign Affairs review is required, it is recommended to allow at least a week to issue the passport. I was told that the issuance was completed in 6 days, but that in some cases it took more than 2 weeks.
If you have an English name (middle name) like this, when issuing or reserving a plane ticket (if there is no separate space for middle name), enter your Korean name and English name (middle name) in First Name, such as “Hakeoung Hannah.” All must be written.
Lastly, in order to prevent the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from rejecting the review, it is recommended that you call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in advance, explain your case, and inquire whether it is possible to write your name in English.
