The Korea Consumer Agency developed a ‘Credit Card Chargeback Service User Guide’ to effectively deal with consumer damage caused by overseas direct purchases.
Credit card chargeback service refers to deposit cancellation or refund, and is a service that requests the card company to cancel an already approved transaction if the overseas transaction consumer has reasons such as suspicion of fraud, non-delivery, suspicion of counterfeit goods, or non-fulfillment of refund.
In fact, as a result of analyzing 823 consumer consultations related to overseas direct purchases received through the ‘International Transaction Consumer Portal’ operated by the Korea Consumer Agency from January to October this year, 301 cases were damaged due to delays and rejections in cancellation, refund, and exchange processing. (37%), 114 cases (14%) of damage due to loss of business contact and site closure, and 103 cases (13%) of damage related to delivery.
Of these, 35.0% (288 cases) were classified as damages that could be resolved through credit card chargeback services, and guidance on how to use the service was provided.
In addition, the chargeback service can be used not only for damage to goods purchased directly from overseas, but also for damage related to hotel and rental car reservations and tax refunds incurred while traveling overseas.
The chargeback service can be applied for in writing to the credit card company within 120 days from the date of card payment (date of receipt of invoice), and you must submit supporting materials such as transaction receipts, order details, and emails exchanged with the business to prove the claim.
In order to effectively respond to damage from overseas direct purchases, the Korea Consumer Agency developed a ‘Credit Card Chargeback Service Usage Guide’ and installed it on the ‘International Transaction Consumer Portal’, a consumer information portal for overseas direct purchases.
